Edmond Mobile Meals Spotlight

EMM Volunteer: Mike Cunningham, August 2014

07/21/2014

Mike CunninghamMike has played almost every volunteer role at Edmond Mobile Meals. He even worked in the kitchen with Toni one day and then decided that it probably wasn’t for him! He is so great with our clients when he delivers the meals and is always willing to go above and beyond for EMM. When we sat down with Mike to learn a little more about him, he shared some funny and interesting facts.

Q: What is your favorite meal to cook, and why?
A: My Mom's fried chicken with mashed potatoes and cream gravy.  I grew up on a farm and we raised our own chickens which meant we had fried chicken a lot.  Even though we ate it regularly, there was nothing better than Mom's fried chicken.

Q: If you were stranded on a desert island what 2 items would you want to have with you?
A: Satellite phone and satellite TV.  TV so I could watch sports and phone so I could order pizza.

Q: If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?
A: My son grew up during the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles era and he always had me play Michelangelo, the turtle with the orange mask.  He knew I was on OSU grad, so he let me wear the team colors.  He always played Raphael, the turtle with the red mask.  He is now an OSU grad as well, so I doubt he would play Raphael today....

Q: What is your favorite or funniest moment delivering Mobile Meals?
A: Favorite moments occur every day when my clients open their door with a smile on their face ready to visit for a few minutes and receive their lunch.

Q: What is your favorite family meal tradition?
A: When my parents were living, Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners were my favorites.  Turkey, ham, dressing, desserts, etc.  Now that they are gone, my sisters and I get together twice each year (April & October) and grill hamburgers with all the fixings plus baked beans, potato salad and desserts.  Our families are very spread out, so twice a year is all we can manage.
